Arch Linux 2009.8 Installation Visualization – VirtualBox
Here’s another visual walkthrough of an installation. This time of Arch Linux Core (Core has all the base packages on CD and you have the option for a network, or cd install), which is typically for the more advanced Linux users.
I’m not going to commentate per screenshot because well, it’d take me FOREVER. I’ll do a few though, and hope I don’t get carried away.
First we’re greeted much like many other distributions with a choice of what to do. To install Arch Linux you want to boot to the Arch Live CD

This starts loading the required applications and hardware modules

Once those are done you’re greeted with a login page, to do the installation log in as root, there is no password.

Once you’re in, you run /arch/setup to start the actual installation, and configuration of your machine.

Here is where I’ll skip a ton since the choices are pretty simply defined. If you need some clarification on certain portions, please let me know.

However, I will say for this one if you have access to the internet, then choose the net option as I did in my installation. This will update your packages as you go.

Remember ALWAYS be careful when doing partitions. If you’re not careful and there is data on the drive you wish to preserve you can potentially wipe it all out. So.. if you muck it up, it’s not my fault.

Typically the default is fine, if you are in nano and you want to exit, the ^X option is actually CTRL+X for those of you looking at your keyboards looking for the ^.

After you’ve rebooted you’re greeted with a nice login screen (by default Arch is a command line interface (CLI)). I will post a short tutorial on adding Xorg, and KDE (with the explanation on how to add GNOME / XFCE or Enlightenment also). Expect to see that some time next week.

Thanks for stopping by and if you read this far, you are definitely a brave soul.

This is very good. I look forward to the next one where you show us how to add Xorg and KDE.
