No Effect
Box Switch
Present Windows
Cover Switch
Flip Switch

I found my favorite to be “Cover Switch” for some unknown reason.

Here’s a screenshot of each one (Minus the No Effect):

Recently I upgraded to Amarok 2.2.1.90 from 2.2.0 while testing out some KDE 4.4. However, when I first started listening to the music I realized that my tracks were playing continuously and not randomly. So I went to the menu’s to change this setting (this is where I had previously changed it). But to my surprise there was nothing in any of the menu’s. wa state child support . So what gave? This surprised me in a major way. So I poked around a bit and it’s now been moved solely to the playlist module and seems to have been removed from the menu. With that said this is a pre-release version, and the Track Progression feature may be re-added to the menu’s, but I haven’t added a feature request to ask for this. With that said everything else with the every advancing Amarok has been quite pleasant. Here’s a screenshot for those that have their doubts. (Just the default theme, with slim toolbar and changed playlist groupings). I’ll talk more about features / fixes in 2.2.2 shortly. I’ll talk more about installing it on openSUSE 11.2 in one of the following blog postings. fish in the sea .

Not to mention there is a pretty big regression with QT which keeps global shortcuts from working correctly with KWin.

If you follow my blog you’ll know that I’ve recently switched backed to KDE from GNOME, and I recently found a feature that I really have fallen in love with, when it comes to Dolphin usage.

The feature I will talk about today is Dolpin and Terminal Integration. First I must admit, I found this feature on accident as usually if I wanted to open a shell while in a directory to do certain tasks, I typically just did a “Shift+F4″, which opened a terminal of my current location. However, one time to my enjoyment I guess I didn’t press the “Shift” key, and went directly to “F4″. This brought up a new panel rightfully named Terminal.

I resized the terminal and was overjoyed to see that I now had a terminal within my dolphin window. How freaking cool was that.

Here’s some screenshots of where you’d configure and how the GUI looks with it integrated.

Now the integration goes as step further. As you change directories and do certain tasks like change directories, your terminal will also change directories and your current working directory will be the same ) ..

For the people who haven’t seen this feature, I hope you enjoy it.

Today Google has annonced that Google Chrome is now in Beta for Linux thanks to the continued work and testing from the Chromium Project.

You can see a funny comic about the release which was inspired by xkcd.com here:
http://www.google.com/chrome/intl/en/w00t.html

You can download the .deb and .rpm packages from:
http://www.google.com/chrome/eula.html?hl=en&brand=CHFK

And the main google chrome page can be found here:
http://www.google.com/chrome?hl=en&platform=linux&brand=CHFK

Here is their official statement via e-mail:

Hello everybody out there using Linux -

Google Chrome is go for beta on Linux! Thanks to the many Chromium and WebKit developers who helped make Google Chrome a lean, mean browsing machine. Here are a few fun facts from us on the Google Chrome for Linux team:

60,000 lines of Linux-specific code written
23 developer builds
2,713 Linux-specific bugs fixed
12 external committers and bug editors to the Google Chrome for Linux code base, 48 external code contributors

Thanks for waiting and we hope that you enjoy using Google Chrome!

Google Chrome Team

Great job to all those who tested and helped Chrome become what it has, with emphasis on the developers and the continued maintainers of Chromium for Fedora, openSUSE and Ubuntu.

Ok, I have to admit when I first thought or heard of this feature in KDE 4.4, I wasn’t really excited. I thought.. centex . now why the hell would I want that. Then I started using it.. and found quite a few usage scenario’s for it. The first one, I realized right after I launched my VirtualBox. I had always hated how VirtualBox had a separate window for each VM and / or the main VirtualBox console, however, now with the Windows Grouping this is no longer an issue. Here’s a picture of the Virtual Box window open with 2 tabs. Here’s a close look at the tabs onlyAfter using it with Virtual Box, I realized that there may be other very simple usages of this, which include having 2 browsers open for website compatibility (I primarily use Opera, which some sites are not compatible with, and to combat the second window being open, I grouped my Opera and Firefox). I’m sure there are many other usages of the tabbed windows, that I’m overlooking. I’ve only used it for about 45 minutes and found those 2 cases. .I’d be interested in knowing what usability you think it will help you with. I will later write about adding KDE 4.4 onto openSUSE 11.2, probably when KDE 4.4 hits RC1.

Here are some highlights from the latest release for Linux:

Release Highlights:Added support for OpenGL 3.2.Updated the NVIDIA X driver to allow, on GeForce 8 or greater GPUs, more modes to validate on digital display devices whose EDIDs report very constrained HorizSync or VertRefresh ranges.Fixed a randomly occurring X server crash caused by the PixmapCache option.Increased the allowed amount of overscan compensation from 100 to 200.On GPUs with VDPAU feature set B, VDPAU’s handling of some corrupted or incorrectly formatted H.264 and MPEG streams has been improved.Fixed a memory allocation problem with pre-GeForce 8 GPUs that caused GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap clients (e.g., Compiz, KDE 4) to display incorrect contents.Added support for X.Org xserver 1.6.99.901 (also known as 1.7.0 RC1). Add a new OverscanCompensation NV-CONTROL attribute, available on GeForce 8 and higher. This option specifies the amount of overscan compensation to apply to the current mode. It is measured in raster pixels, i.e. pixels as specified in the current mode’s backend timings.Added GLX support for OpenGL 3.2 context profiles through the extensionGLX_ARB_create_context_profile.Added support for IgnoreEDIDChecksum X configuration option, which can be used to force the X driver to accept the EDID of a display device even when the checksum is invalid. Please see the README IgnoreEDIDChecksum description for a caution and details of use.Added support for configuring the GPU’s fan speed; see the “Coolbits” X configuration option in the README.Fixed a bug in VDPAU that could cause visible corruption near the bottom edge of the picture when decoding VC-1 simple/main profile clips whose heights are not exact multiples of 16 pixels, on GPUs with VDPAU feature set A.On GPUs with VDPAU feature set C, VDPAU now supports decoding MPEG-4 Part 2, DivX 4, and DivX 5 video. The VDPAU API has been enhanced to expose this feature. On GPUs with VDPAU feature set C, VDPAU now supports a higher quality video scaling algorithm. The VDPAU API has been enhanced to expose this feature.Added code to reject screen modes based on available DisplayPort link bandwidth. Fixes display corruption caused by allowing high bandwidth modes on display devices that can’t handle them, such as certain DisplayPort-to-VGA adapters that only support 2 DisplayPort lanes.Fixed an initialization problem on some mobile GPUs.Worked around X.Org X server Bugzilla bug #22804. carpet cleaning services .

Opera 10 Beta 1 was release yesterday and I decided to give it a whirl on my openSUSE 11.1 workstation, and boy was the performance, appearance and overall experience was phenomenal. the humane society . I personally use the browser for Mail (IMAP w/ GMAIL), RSS and ATOM feeds, IRC and Web Browsing. Although there are some room for improvement on future releases (a folders for RSS feeds, more distinct icons for contacts vs non contacts and bigger market share) overall it’s an A+ browser and blows the already superior 9.x out of the water. Opera 10 has quite a few new features with a sleek new gui that will blow any browser your running right out of the water. Diamonds . Here’s a quick list of some of the major new features:

Opera Turbo for fast browsing on slow connections

40% faster engine and cutting-edge Web standards support

Auto-update

E-mail your way (text formatting)

You can find all the other features at http://www.opera.com/next

This release features kernel 2.6.26.8.tex3, KDE 3.5.10, Open Office 3.0, Firefox 3.0.7, Thunderbird 2.0.0.14, Ktorrent, Frostwire, Amarok, Flash, Java JRE, Compiz-Fusion 3D and much more. We decided to use kde3-5-10 as our default desktop as we could not achieve a similar functionality from kde4. roofing repair . We will however offer kde4 as an alternative desktop environment available from the repository once we stabilize it. PCLinuxOS is an rpm based distribution utilizing apt-get with a Synaptic Software Manager frontend. In addition to the above PCLinuxOS comes with mklivecd GUI, a nice utility to build a custom live CD from your install. Install or remove what you want then remaster your own cd. Computer Service . Great for backups or to give to friends. PCLinuxOS is also known as as rolling release distribution. What that means is you install once and update it when new applications become available from our repository.

I hope to have a review within the next few days .. Need to do something while I’m inbetween openSUSE releases (can’t wait for openSUSE 11.2 Alpha). BenThere is also a PCLinuxOS 2009.1 GNOME Version which can be found here
