This release brings me much joy, as a Fluxbox user, it solidifies the point that Fluxbox is still being maintained upstream. mobile mechanic . the lasik center . What is fluxbox? Fluxbox is a windowmanager for X that was based on the Blackbox 0.61.1 code. It is very light on resources and easy to handle but yet full of features to make an easy, and extremely fast, desktop experience. Here is a list of fixes / changes from fluxbox.org:

Added support for bidirectional text, #2801836.Allow to override ‘Focus New Windows’ via .fluxbox/appsNew actions:ActivateTabArrangeWindowsVerticalNew ‘MoveN’ and ‘ClickN’ action support for keys fileNew focus model ‘StrictMouseFocus’. This will affect focus when closing, moving, lowering windows, changing desktops, etc, whereas the ‘MouseFocus’ model will only change focus when you move the mouse.New “background: unset” property for use in overlays.Allowing relative paths for background images in style files.Allowing matching screen number in ClientPattern.Removed rootcommand from init, as fbsetbg is run automatically nowadays.Removed line style resources from init file.

Unfortunately in KDE 4.4.2, Nepomuk the KDE Desktop Search tool is enabled by default.

I say unfortunate because many of you may experience times when your system is slow due to high CPU utilization caused by Nepomuk’s indexing mechanism (I experienced this on Kubuntu 10.04 Lucid RC while doing some testing)

Fortunately you can disable this feature quite easily using systemsettings (System Settings in the KMenu).

To do this open system settings, click on the Advanced tab and click on Desktop Search:

Now you want to uncheck the box labeled “Enable Nepomuk Semantic Desktop”

Here it is unchecked, for the people who are really lost:

Click on Apply, and you’re good to go… Nepomuk is no longer going to index your filesystem and suck up your CPU cycles.

I’ll be the first to tell you, that I’m horrible with graphic design (and I think my sites layout will attribute to that claim), and because I’m not very familiar with Image Manipulation products I choose to use GIMP, since it does “what I need”, which I must admit are some of the most common tasks that I’m sure even more basic applications could do.

However some of the features that Adobe is marketing, are just out of this world and to me seem border lined magical.

One that really caught my eyes is Content Aware Fill, check out this example

Another concept that has obviously taken to the main stream recently is 3D, and with Adobe CS5 the introduction to 3D extrusions using repousse, we now have it on our desktops in a more simpler fashion:

Another awesome feature is puppet warp which will allow you to seamlessly move and modify your picture and or text to better beautify your image

I seriously cannot get enough of these new features, which also includes automatic lens correction, which is done by reading the images EXIF data.

There are obviously plenty of other new features, but one should not overlook all the great enhancements, which include, but are not limited to:
State-of-the-art raw image processing
Better media management
Faster performance across platforms
Efficient workflow
Superior black-and-white conversion

You can find out much more on Adobes CS5 various pages

In the openSUSE 11.3 Milestone 1 Release, they tout LXDE as

“the “Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment” is a new player in the openSUSE desktop selection. It is an extremely fast-performing and energy-saving desktop environment. It comes with a beautiful interface, multi-language support, standard keyboard short cuts and additional features like tabbed file browsing. LXDE uses less CPU and less RAM than other environments. It is especially designed for computers with low hardware specifications.”

You can find more about LXDE in general at http://lxde.org.

Being as impatient as I am, I decided to give LXDE a shot prior to waiting for openSUSE 11.3. The LXDE team makes this quite easy to do with openSUSE 11.2. My experiences (although on my test machine memory is not an issue) were quite pleasant. Not only was less memory consumed, but everything I tried was more snappier and more responsive. I’ll talk more about that in a following blog entry.

So here’s how you’d install it:
Set up the lxde Build Service Repository:

su -c ‘zypper ar -f http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/lxde/openSUSE_11.2/ openSUSE\ 11.2\ LXDE

Now you can install the LXDE pattern (a pattern is a meta file with the group of packages that make the installation complete):

su -c ‘zypper in -t pattern LXDE’

Wow, that was easy wasn’t it? It seriously can’t get any easier can it? .. Well since you asked.. Yes Yes it can. The LXDE team has provided 1 click installs for LXDE on openSUSE 11.0 – 11.2

openSUSE 11.2

openSUSE 11.1

openSUSE 11.0

After you install it you can choose your session to be LXDE at your login screen (ie your KDM or GDM screen).

I’ll post more about configuring certain things while in LXDE. Like wrapping your desktop switching, changing your OpenBox fonts and your LXDE Appearance fonts etc.

Last May, we discussed a number of challenges facing[1] Blogger users who relied on FTP to publish their blogs. dental consulting . FTP remains a significant drain on our ability to improve Blogger: only .5% of active blogs are published via FTP yet the percentage of our engineering resources devoted to supporting FTP vastly exceeds that. On top of this, critical infrastructure that our FTP support relies on at Google will soon become unavailable, which would require that we completely rewrite the code that handles our FTP processing.Three years ago we launched Custom Domains[2] to give users the simplicity of Blogger, the scalability of Google hosting, and the flexibility of hosting your blog at your own URL. Last year’s post discussed the advantages of custom domains over FTP[3] and addressed a number of reasons users have continued to use FTP publishing. (If you’re interested in reading more about Custom Domains, our Help Center has a good overview[4] of how to use them on your blog.) In evaluating the investment needed to continue supporting FTP, we have decided that we could not justify diverting further engineering resources away from building new features for all users. For that reason, we are announcing today that we will no longer support FTP publishing in Blogger after March 26, 2010. nm child support . We realize that this will not necessarily be welcome news for some users, and we are committed to making the transition as seamless as possible. To that end:We are building a migration tool that will walk users through a migration from their current URL to a Blogger-managed URL (either a Custom Domain or a Blogspot URL) that will be available to all users the week of February 22. This tool will handle redirecting traffic from the old URL to the new URL, and will handle the vast majority of situations. We will be providing a dedicated blog[5] and help documentation Blogger team members will also be available to answer questions on the forum, comments on the blog, and in a few scheduled conference calls once the tool is released. We have a number of big releases planned in 2010. While we recognize that this decision will frustrate some users, we look forward to showing you the many great things on the way. Thanks for using Blogger. Regards, Rick Klau Blogger Product Manager Google 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway Mountain View, CA 94043
I personally use wordpress, so just figured I’d just get it out there to make sure everyone knows.

The immediate release of Banshee 1.5.3 brings lots of new features, with loads of fixes (75) since 1.5.2. Here’s a list of many of the new features (from banshee-project.org

Sync Device From Playlist Option
Either manually manage what files are added/removed to your device, or choose a playlist to sync from. You can make a size-limited smart playlist to sync just the right amount to your device.

Type-ahead Find in Track, Artist, and Album Lists
An alternative to filtering, type-ahead find jumps you to the first track to match your query. Activate with shift+/, cancel with Esc, and jump to next match with F3. In track list it matches against artist, album, or title.

Optional Cover Art in Lower-left Corner
Turn on via View > Show Cover Art

Cover Art Editable via Drag-and-Drop and Right-click
Can edit via the cover art in the track editor, lower-left corner, and beside the seek-slider.

Audiobooks Library
Rough first version, main benefits are separating your books from your music and defining a different file system organization. In future versions we plan to add intuitive bookmarking and a better browsing experience. Enable in Extensions tab of Preferences.

Library-folder Watcher
Watches your libraries’ folders for added, renamed, or deleted files, and updates your libraries appropriately. Requires Mono >= 2.4.3. Enable in Extensions tab of Preferences.

eMusic Importer/Downloader
If you have purchased music from eMusic and have a .emx file, Banshee will download and import the music files for you. Select ‘eMusic Files’ from the normal Media > Import Media dialog. Enable in Extensions tab of Preferences.

GIO File Backend, Supports Non-local Files
This backend uses the GIO library to support importing local files and network-share files alike. Requires glib >= 2.22 and Gio#.

As I stated in the title Banshee 1.5.3 also brings the return of Mac OS X Support, which can be seen here:
http://banshee-project.org/download/#osx

For Mac OS X they have an available dmg here:
http://download.banshee-project.org/banshee/banshee-1-1.5.3.macosx.intel.dmg

I’ll write a different posting of installing on openSUSE / Ubuntu / Fedora

The Amarok team proudly announced yesterday that Amarok 2.2.2 has been released. Only 2 months after the release of 2.2.1 and a few weeks after a beta release that was seen in December. roofing contractor . The 2.2.2 release focused mainly on UI, and bug fixes. It did however have it’s share of new features which include the Moodbar, custom labeling, podcast improvements and simplifying the editing of lyrics. You can read more about the release including all the fixes / improvements in the Amarok 2.2.2 Release NotesThe openSUSE Build Service has Amarok 2.2.2 in the KDE:KDE4:Factory:Desktop repository which could be added using
sudo zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/Desktop/openSUSE_11.2/ openSUSE 11.2 KDE Factory Desktop
If you add the above repository it is recommended you also add the KDE:KDE4:Community repository, which would be done with:
sudo zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Community/openSUSE_11.2_KDE4_Factory_Desktop/ openSUSE 11.2 Community Factory Desktop
You could then upgrade just Amarok with:
sudo zypper in amarok
Or upgrade everything to the versions provided in the Factory repository with:
sudo zypper dup

I’ve recently come across the application Blogilo, which I from here on out will reference as the Blog Gigolo. Most of my blog posts I do in the wordpress backend, in a web browser since it’s what I knew.

However, recently I found this awesome application which is supposed to be shipping along side with KDE 4.4. The name Blogilo comes from unknown source to me, although I’m sure there is quite a compelling story behind it, and I’d love to know it.

Ok.. So enough about that.. the actual application was very very simple to integrate with my WordPress Blog. I simply went to Blog –> Add Blog, and filled out the following box:

Here are some pictures from their configurations. Although to my dismay the “Automatically add “Powered by Blogilo” to every post” option was disabled by default. I honestly think they should ship it with it enabled, along with the “Enable spell checking” feature for the merks in the works like myself that can’t spell a darn’ed thing.

Here’s what the main page looks like with a single (this very post) open with the “Blog Posts” Toolbox opened. The other toolbox options are Post Categories, Post Options and Local Enteries, and I’m sure you can use your imagination to figure out what those give you.

Once I’m done with a blog entry I simply press “Submit”, choose a few options as seen below, and click “Ok”.

It’s a pretty awesome tool, that I haven’t yet used to its most its full capabilities, but I intend to use it more often to see how it can better allow me publish enteries to my blog. For the 5 people that actually read it that is.

Since the code shift from KDE 3 to KDE 4, many KDE and KDE Application Developers endured lots of hate, unjust bias and down right mean reviews.
On the amarok.kde.org, they also had some other words to point out:

The Amarok team is proud to bring you Amarok 2.0.2, codenamed “Only Time Will Tell”. It is a stability update for the Amarok 2.0 series. brake repair .
Our primary focus is on the upcoming 2.1 feature release, but we have fixed a number of the most critical and annoying bugs present in 2.0.1.1.
Be sure to give all the KDE and KDE Application Developers your praises (k3b, amarok, kaffine and the likes) to show that the community support for them is still there and strong.

Ding dong the names are gone. Ever since I started using Compiz, I was confused by all the different forks, like Beryl, Compiz++, Compiz Fusion and the overall misdirection of Compiz and all the separate branches. I thought with the forking of Beryl to Compiz Fusion this political project background was fixed, but nope we were right back where we started, backed by a total lack of direction. But today it was announced that a major reorganization would take place including a new council and a single name, Compiz. Compiz originated from Novell thanks to David Reveman and the community was outraged with how the handling of the project was going. This caused the for of Beryl, which was then forked to Compiz Fusion, which branched to Compiz++ which (ok you get the point). So here’s some information from the announcement: http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/compiz/2009-February/003284.htmlThe members of the council are, in alphabetical order: – Danny “maniac” Baumann – Dennis “onestone” Kasprzyk – Guillaume “iXce” Seguin – Kristian “KristianL” Lyngstl – Sam “SmSpillaz” SpilsburyThe council has already decided on a preliminary road map, that is subjectto change. The preliminary roadmap is:- Merge Compiz and Compiz Fusion both in name and support systems. We are now using just Compiz as the name, and Compiz is moving away from Freedesktop entirely. Details are still being worked out.- Release Compiz 0.8.0. Expect a release schedule later this evening.- Merge Compiz++ to master.- Release Compiz 0.9.0. This will happen shortly after the merge of Compiz++ is finished to allow for testing and feedback.- Release Compiz 0.9.2. clark kent . This will happen a few weeks after 0.9.0 as a pure bug-fix/cleanup release, with no major changes.- At this point we will look at Nomad. If Nomad is ready to merge, we will aim for a 0.9.4 release which will include Nomad, and a 0.9.6 release which, similar to 0.9.2, will be a bug-fix/cleanup release.- If Nomad is not ready, we will go over the option handling in 0.9.4, and push Nomad back as necessary. Things To Do In Las Vegas . Otherwise, the option handling will be overhauled in the release after the Nomad bug-fix.We may soon see a nice stable Compiz release with the NOMAD integration which is UPSTREAM (amazing, I’ve been wanting that for MONTHS since NOMAD was killing my compiz w/ compiz fusion.. wtf?). Lets hope

As some of you may have read from my blog earlier, I was complaining about the “loss” of emerald without notification to the user community. However, during the 11th hour it seems as though David Reveman really pulled through. You can check out the following bug to see Davids remarks: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=431846Which I’ll include here:

A compiz package fix that will allow emerald to work properly without anychanges has been submitted to X11:Compiz.I also submitted a patch to the emerald package that will allow it to work withremote desktops (nomad) or without the previously mentioned update to compiz.

If anyone has a working Compiz on 11.1 (from the installation source, or Factory) please test out emerald, and let me know if it is working for you. heating contractors . I have it working, but I am still using the packages in XGL, which do not include the NOMAD patch and wouldn’t be a correct representation since the NOMAD patch caused the emerald regression. Many thanks to David R for taking the ball and running with it. Now we just have to find out if there will be a long term maintainer. Build Local Sites . 1 guy 1 brush .

I think the “lame duck” free CrossOver office day will do much better then bad for CodeWeavers. public storage locations . I will honestly have to say after a year I’ll re-evaluate wine / codeweaver progression and if codeweaver still outperforms wine as it does now, then I’ll cough up the few bucks and subscribe for another year (not to mention I am sure they’ll have another Major release around December to try to get the people that are “on the edge” after the lame duck download. Ok.. contractor roofing . so today I got my email with my registration code and went ahead and download and installed it. I then installed Office / IE6 (which I previously had run in Wine) and i’d be damned. The performance was way better, wineserver wouldn’t hang on occassion (this is a problem I had with wine running IE6), some little issues that wine had with ie6 (the look of the address bar etc) aren’t in codeweavers cross over office, Microsoft Word / Excel work faster, and better not to mention the 2007 Compatability pack was simple to install. So props to the codeweaver developers, the wine developers (since this is really what it’s based off of), and the lame duck free day (again, a damn great ploy as they will at least get another 50 – 100 customers I am sure). This is a great movement that I think will show that opensource companies can actually make a profit.

I currently use my gmail account with Kmail using dIMAP on openSUSE 11.0 running on KDE 3.5.10. I at times thought of moving to straight IMAP, but I loved having the offline features. However, this was painfully slow since it had to download everything twice (once in your “All Mail” and once in each of your folders which contain your messages that have been “labeled”). Not to mention another download once you moved them to your trash etc.

However, this has all changed with the Advanced features for IMAP in Google Labs. To enable this features log into your Gmail account, go to Settings, Labs and enable the following feature:

Now click on “Labels”.

Here you can uncheck All Mail and Trash. This limits the amount of mail that actually gets replicated (if using dIMAP), or refreshed (if using standard IMAP).

Now click on “Forwarding POP/IMAP” to configure some other great features. Why would you change these? Well because now, you don’t have to keep dragging the message to the Gmail trash folder, you can just delete in your local client, and it’ll move it to Gmail Trash automatically (about time).

Here are the settings I chose:

Read to official Gmail Advanced IMAP Blog Post

Now with IMAP I have the convenience of POP, with the great features and abilities of IMAP.

Need to set up Gmail IMAP / POP?, find that here

I recently started checking out some Notebook applications (web / client based ) and came across Evernote, which seemed pretty intriging. I saw that it had a MAC and Windows client, and quickly realized that they lacked a Linux Client. So I turned to wine, and downloaded the package. The wine installation went just fine, and most features that i’ve tested seem to work just fine.Evernote’s web based system is also very good (although doesn’t support Opera). car accident lawyer . honda dealerships . My next goal is to check out Google Notebook, Zoho Notebook and Evernote and i’ll list a nice pro / con and feature set of each when i’m done.Hopefully soon Google Notebook will have the email to note feature.
