GNOME 2.26 Released – openSUSE 11.1

The GNOME Project has announced the release of GNOME 2.26. Here’s some information from gnome.org:

Introduction to GNOME
GNOME 2.26 is the latest version of the GNOME Desktop: a popular, multi-platform desktop environment for your computer. GNOME’s focus is ease of use, stability, and first class internationalisation and accessibility support. GNOME is Free and Open Source Software and provides all of the common tools computer users expect of a modern computing environment, such as e-mail, groupware, web browsing, file management, multimedia, and games. Furthermore, GNOME provides a flexible and powerful platform for software developers, both on the desktop and in mobile applications.

The GNOME Desktop is released every six months and contains many new features, improvements, bug fixes, and translations. GNOME 2.26 continues this tradition. To learn more about GNOME and the qualities that distinguish it from other computer desktop environments (such as usability, accessibility, internationalisation, and freedom) visit the About GNOME page on our website.

Here’s some information they have which is more directed towards the 2.26 release:
The GNOME Project’s focus on users and usability continues in GNOME 2.26 with its hundreds of bug fixes and user-requested improvements. The sheer number of enhancements makes it impossible to list every change and improvement made, but these notes aim to highlight some of the more exciting, user-oriented features in this release.

There is a bunch more information and details on the GNOME 2.26 Release Notes page.

The build service repository for GNOME Factory now includes the said 2.26 packages (I haven’t installed as I am a KDE user, but after seeing some changes in GTK (they actually have progress bars and icons in widgits.. about time) I may have to give it more thought (the nm-applet also has TLS-EAP capabilities, which KNetworkManager lacks).

The repository for GNOME 2.26 is:

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/GNOME:/Factory/openSUSE_11.1/

You must also add the backport repository:

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/GNOME:/Backports/openSUSE_11.1/

You can set the repository up by running:

sudo zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/GNOME:/Factory/openSUSE_11.1/ GNOME\ Factory && sudo zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/GNOME:/Backports/openSUSE_11.1/ GNOME\ Backport

You can set it to autorefresh by doing:

sudo zypper mr -r GNOME\ Factory && sudo zypper mr -r GNOME\ Backport

You can then update doing:

sudo zypper up -t package -r GNOME\ Factory -y && sudo zypper up -t package -r GNOME\ Backport

Also, there is an X Bug that will cause your CPU to go to 100%. If you experience this setup the following repository:

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/MBoman/openSUSE_11.1/

Add, and update with:

sudo zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/MBoman/openSUSE_11.1/ Magnus\ Home && sudo zypper up -t package -r Magnus\ Home

Make sure you thank:
Iznogood
Bryen Yunashko
Magnus Boman

For bringing up the important updates to the CPU bug and backports.

I have not tested the packages on the factory repository, and you should be aware that this is from a FACTORY repository, which is the area for the next release of openSUSE (which will be 11.2). I mustsay.. I may actually give this GNOME a shot.. so I’ll report back later..

  1. Iznogood is correct in listing the additional repositories required when using GNOME:Factory.

The GNOME:Factory version of 2.26 is running swell on most of our desktops. Naturally there’s a few bugs here and there which those of us on the GNOME Team are identifying and rectifying.

I would encourage users to wait a few more days until GNOME:Stable repository is done populating from :Factory. Or they’ll end up getting updates to the next factory version of GNOME which may be quite unstable. :-)

  2. Magnus Boman says:

Thanks Ben for that. I would appreciate if you could update it to reflect what Iznogood said though. It is important :-)

  3. ben.kevan says:

Iznogood, Bryen and Magnus.. Thanks for the updates.. I’ve added.

  4. Marcolino says:

Hello, I install as stated above, but some problems are occurring. When my system loads, has a problem with the incompatibility with XKB. Another issue is that when I turn the effects on the desktop, buttons, Minimize, Maximize and Close, in addition to the title bar does not appear.

    An idea ?

  5. Oleg says:

    Gnome 2.26 require GTK+ 2.16!
    OS11.1 used 2.10

after udate I can’t run Gnome terminal :(

    Ithink need update gtk+
    but where gtk 2.16 repositories?

  6. Oleg says:

    @Oleg
    I’m update with yast…

    sudo zypper up -t package -r GNOME\ Factory -y && sudo zypper up -t package -r GNOME\ Backportsudo zypper up -t package -r GNOME\ Factory -y && sudo zypper up -t package -r GNOME\ Backport

As I can see it install gtk 2.16 and many other packages :)

    Testing continues …

  8. Marius says:

    Same problems as @Marcolino.
But, i managed to solve the “invisible”, “minimize, maximize and close” when the effects are turned on by adding the:
repositorie and update the version of compiz. It use emerald instead of metacity, but at least i can see the buttons and it works.
If someone who has a solution for the XKB error, posting it here would be greatly appreciated.
    thx

  9. ben.kevan says:

I’ll load gnome up and see why you guys are having some issues.. can you list your video card and packages of compiz you’re running?

Also, when do you get the error (what are you donig when you get it?). And when / how is it reproduced.

  10. Marius says:

    Hi Ben!
I upgraded my gnome using the gui software manager, after that my gnome terminal wouldn’t start, so i fired up an xterm and ran “gnome-terminal” from within. I got an error saying something about gtk being to old, a quick check for the version of gtk2 showed me that everything was upgraded except gtk2 package which was still at version 2.14, upgraded to 2.16 and now my gnome terminal works.

The second problem was: when i tunrned on the effects, i could no see my close, maximze and minimize buttons, but if clicked around where there should be they worked, like i said above….”they where invisible” :) . I added the X11:/Compiz repositorie, upgraded the compiz and now i can see them, except it’s not using metacity, instead it use emerald. Changing the window border from appearence doesn’t do anything.

The third problem which still exist is an XKB error “Error activating XKB configuration.”. I don’t have to do anything to get it, it’s free. It appeares everytime i log in. Other than this everything works like a charm.

It was a fresh install using net cd and the default gnome selected.
I’m running it on a macbook pro 4.1
    My video card is:
    linux-8s73:~ # lspci | grep -i nvidia
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 8600M GT (rev a1)

    the driver is:
    linux-8s73:~ # rpm -qa | grep -i nvidia
    x11-video-nvidiaG02-180.29-0.1
    nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-pae-180.29_2.6.27.18_0.3-0.1

    and my compiz version is:
    linux-8s73:~ # rpm -qa | grep -i compiz
    python-compizconfig-0.7.8-2.30
    compiz-gnome-0.7.8-41.1
    compiz-fusion-plugins-extra-0.7.8-9.33
    libcompizconfig-0.7.8-10.4
    compizconfig-settings-manager-0.7.8-5.19
    compiz-fusion-plugins-unsupported-0.7.8-2.33
    compiz-0.7.8-41.1
    compiz-manager-0.0.1_git080201-72.1
    compiz-fusion-plugins-main-0.7.8-4.16
    compiz-branding-openSUSE-0.7.8-41.1
    compiz-fusion-plugins-main-0.7.8-30.14

    I hope it helps
    have a nice day!

Just did an update last night by adding the two repo’s above through Yast. GNOME 2.26 works well on my desktop PC.
Full system (hardware) specs are here:http://www.smolts.org/client/show/?uuid=pub_b541a450-9bc1-45fd-beab-d46ee43a0108

Do we know when GNOME:Stable will have v2.26?

  13. Ilfirin says:

The XKB error has no connection to compiz.

  15. Jay M says:

The GNOME 2.26 Stable Repo is:
    http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/GNOME:/STABLE:/2.26/openSUSE_11.1/

    Note:
It is so far available only for openSUSE 11.1, as of date.

  16. Jury says:

    @Oleg

I had the same problem. The update breaks some dependencies, so you may need to issue “zypper verify” to re-check them.

  17. rolph says:

    @Marcolino
same problem. Did you find a solve?

  18. Oleg says:

    Hi all
    About Compiz
After update to Gnome 2.26 and enable effects i could no see my close, maximze and minimize buttons…
    Then go to page http://en.opensuse.org/Compiz_Fusion
    and install 1-click install for gnome 2.26 – http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/XGL/openSUSE_11.1_GNOME_Factory/compiz-gnome.ymp

    All works fine!

    Good luck
