I've made some rpm's to make it easier for you to install on openSUSE (and other RPM variations):
The files are located here:
i386:
http://www.benkevan.com/upload/software/openSUSE/google-chrome-unstable-3.0.198.11-1.i386.rpm
x86_64:
http://www.benkevan.com/upload/software/openSUSE/google-chrome-unstable-3.0.198.1-1.x86_64.rpm
You can install using:
x86_64:
sudo rpm -Uvh http://www.benkevan.com/upload/software/openSUSE/google-chrome-unstable-3.0.198.1-1.x86_64.rpm
i386:
sudo rpm -Uvh http://www.benkevan.com/upload/software/openSUSE/google-chrome-unstable-3.0.198.1-1.i386.rpm
Note: If you get dependency errors please add --nodeps
Due to popular demand I’ve included the symlinks in the build of the rpm package (I’ve tested the 32-bit but not the 64 bit).
I added Requires: gconf2-32bit in the .spec file for RPM’s, but again I wasn’t able to test it since I do not have access to a 64-Bit Box (I’m cheap.. I know.. I can’t afford a new box).. Please someone test and let me know if all worked fine.
Changes:For 64-Bit I have linked the required libraries previously needed by the 32-Bit libgconf-2 packages to the libraries in /opt/google/chrome/lib32. However, I do not have a 64-bit machine to test on, so can someone please test and comment?
If the above rpm installs, but does not run because of a missing library, you can run the following commands:
for i in libsmime3.so libnssutil3.so libnss3.so libssl3.so; do sudo ln -s /usr/lib/$i /usr/lib/$i.1d; done
and
for i in libplds4.so libplc4.so libnspr4.so ; do sudo ln -s /usr/lib/$i /usr/lib/$i.0d; done
Also within this build I did a post script to include PARTIAL flash support (assuming your flash is installed as /usr/lib/browser-plugins/libflashplayer.so) If you have other locations please let me know, and I can change this and look for the file prior to linking it, but too lazy for now).
You can start google chrome with flash support using:
google-chrome --enable-plugins
NOTE: Once I get the .spec to work correctly and install the required 32-bit gconf2 packages, then I will go ahead and start the build service.. so please someone test and let me know if it works..

Ben, you are a gem
I tested google-chrome at my mother’s PC (crap Intel GMA945 Celeron 2.4GHz and 512MB RAM), and it started couple of times faster than firefox, it’s flash performance was also better. It is going to be one of the best (if not the best) browsers on linux. Additionally its not slower on linux when compared to the same setup on windows
Yes, i’m looking at You firefox.
P.S. Peacekeeper, the browser benchmark (some may not accept it some may) reported google-chrome more than two times faster than firefox on my mother’s PC.
Thanks for this, I look forward to seeing it in the opensuse build service soon. In the meantime I would like to subscribe to your google chrome posts, however the feed url http://www.benkevan.com/blog/tag/google-chrome/feed/ redirects to http://feeds2.feedburner.com/BenKevansBlog.
@Chaz6
Yeah.. I need to figure out what’s up with that.. Thanks for letting me know..
I always get:
/opt/google/chrome/chrome: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9′ not found (required by /opt/google/chrome/chrome)
when trying to start the 64-bit version using openSUSE 11.1. According to ldd, everything is in place and should work.
You need to install all 32 bit packages. The 64 bit chromium is in fact 32 bit and it looks like they won’t port it to 64 very fast. If you lack a dependency on a 64 bit box then you might need a xxx-32bit package.
btw to use chrome on opensuse 11.0 cairo 1.4 must be upgraded to 1.6. otherwise it doesn’t start.
@BenderBendingRodriguez
So it is. 32-bit I mean, both “file” and “ldd” tells me so. And from what I can gather, all xxx-32bit packages are installed (besides, other 32bit programs, admittedly very few, work as they should). At least ldd can find all required 32-bit libs apart from version 3.4.9 of libstdc++.so.6. According to yast, the required package is libstdc++43, which is installed in both 64-bit and 32-bit versions. Do I need to create an additional symlink?
The rpm works perfectly on Mandriva 2009.1. One has to link the libs as explained (they are in /lib, not /usr/lib on Mandriva). May be you could say this on the next version blog post… (or edit this one
I’ve got an old machine and Chrome is eating much more power than does Firefox or Konqueror. May be I’m doing something wrong, but opening the same tabs in Chrome leaves the CPU (Athlon XP 2600+) at 100% all the time!
By the way, thanks for the packages!
RPM do Google Chrome para openSUSE
“http://rauhmaru.blogspot.com/2009/08/rpm-do-google-chrome-para-opensuse.html”
I just installed the 64-bit version on openSUSE 11.1, and it worked right out of the box without any need to link libraries. Thanks!
I had to download the file and then run in in terminal but the browser works great. Thanks for building the RPM.
I use OpenSUSE 11.1 KDE 4.3
Same here
Creating a new build anytime soon?
Thanks!
Good job, Ben!
I’m using your rpm’s in my OpenSuSE 11.1 and i can say to you that your last release works fine in an 64 bit PC ( A Quad Core Duo with 8 GB of ram ). The Adobe Flash plugin ( 64 bit Release Candidate ) works fine too.
Regards and thanks a lot!
I used the i386 RPM on RHEL 5, and when I try to run google-chrome, I get, “/opt/google/chrome/chrome: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9′ not found (required by /opt/google/chrome/chrome)”
