KDE 4.4 Solid Auto Mount Enhancements
As an addition to my previous posting of KDE 4.4 Enhancements, I thought I’d bring to the forefront, that another great feature that will be included in the release of KDE 4.4, is the ability for Solid to Auto Mount Devices and (I haven’t noticed it before, but maybe it has always been this way) is the changing of the icon after a task has been completed successfully, or for information.
Here’s a picture of the information icon from when I recently plugged in a device:
![]()
After Plugging in a USB Device, I verified it auto mounted:
![]()
I was quite happy to see it mount..
After I unmounted it, the device notifier icon turned into a check mark, noting that the umount was successful.
Sorry if you don’t care about these little blurbs, but I expect to do a few more for some of the other features that are coming out in KDE 4.4.

This is just FYI. The KDE Community is trying to re-brand KDE. The term “KDE 4.4″ is the former terminology. If I understand the context of your blog right, the new terminology would be “KDE Plasma Desktop 4.4″ since you seem to be talking about an actual desktop environment as opposed to the whole KDE software compilation (KDE SC 4.4). More info on the re-branding can be found here (http://community.kde.org/Promo/Branding/Rebranding_KDE_v1.1.0) if you are interested.
Thanks for the positive blogging. I hope this comment was useful to you.

Its really too bad this Device Notifier can’t properly safely remove usb devices.
The device is not really safely removed when you see the check mark. It just sort of fakes it.
If you have a device such as a nook or some other usb sticks with an indicator light, the device still thinks its mounted, it does not turn off its indicator. Unplugging it in this state if risky and I have had data loss doing so.
I believe they are mounting synchronously and therefore believe it is save to tell the user to go ahead and unmount, but in fact it is not safe.
If you doubt this, plug in the random usb stick, and open up Dolphin to show the Places panel. Note that the stick is unmounted, but appears in Places.
Go ahead and click it, and Dolphin will mount it and show content. Now Safely remove. Its still shown in Places. Jerk it out and it disappears from places. It was NOT safely removed.
It seems the only way to make sure it is safely removed is to force a non-synchronous mount. I have yet to find a way to get Device manager to do this.
Quality info once again.
