Stupid. First they spend on marketing campaigns to repair the damage done by the MS-Novell deal, then they ruin their image entirely by firing the openSUSE developers.

I really give up on Novell (not on openSUSE, though).

I am a huge fan of Novell (as I think NDS > AD, Netware > Microsoft Server Editions). However, they make very poor business decisions.

They have pretty good cash on hand, and I think that will help them through this global recession, but the fact that now RedHat and Microsoft are collaborating in the Virtualization space may have negative impact on the Novell-MS Deal.

  3. Rame says:

Eh? Where did they announce? The announcement was about the one that was already completed.

  4. Ryan K says:

Chris: Novell joins just about every company in the world by laying off a few employees to keep the doors open, and you give up on them? When Microsoft announced 2 week ago that they were laying off employees did you give up on them too? You speak of ruining an image… How is Microsoft’s image when they mess up on severance packages and try to pull back money from fired employees.

It’s tough times everywhere. Good folks are loosing their jobs through no fault of their own. You call the decisions stupid. But if you can’t shed a few employees now, you run the risk of loosing everyone in the future.

Have you ever personally had to fire one of your own employees? Someone you consider a friend? It’s not a fun thing and not done out of stupidity. Rather than throwing out harsh words for people doing the best they can, why don’t you offer some support to those affected?
